About Ethernet Direct's SFP Policy

Ethernet Direct is more open than most vendors! We will not lock out other suppliers of SFPs from connecting into our hardware. This is a common practice of most switch vendors. They put a software lock in the SFP that the switch looks for, and, if the switch cannot find it, the SFP port is turned off. They provide a low cost of the base unit and then force you to buy their SFPs to make up for the initial base price. We are so confident in all our prices, we will refrain from this practice. In this way you are free to choose the best transceiver or re-use other suppliers' transceivers you may already own.

There are many manufacturers of SFPs - they vary in temperature specification, distance and price.

The type of SFP can be multimode or singlemode - the singlemode SFP can have a specification for distance that is 10, 20, 30, 40, 70, 80 or 120km. The longer the distance, the more powerful the light source must be, and that determines the price.

If you are currently using another switch vendor, ask them if they support an 'Open' SFP policy.
